Nigerians are once again grappling with rising costs, this time in the telecommunications sector, as MTN Nigeria has significantly increased data prices, making internet access even more expensive for millions. The new pricing structure has sparked outrage among consumers, who argue that the hike is not only exploitative but also unjustifiable given the current economic crisis.
From ₦600 to ₦2,000: A Drastic Jump
Previously, MTN subscribers could purchase 2.5GB for ₦600, but this package has now been scrapped. Instead, users are forced to buy 5.5GB for ₦2,000, over three times the previous price. Similarly, the 1GB plan, which once cost ₦350, has been increased to ₦500.
Despite these hikes, many customers complain that data consumption has worsened, with bundles depleting faster than before.
“Before, I could manage 2.5GB for a few days, but now 5.5GB finishes in the same time, even though I’m paying more,” said a frustrated Lagos-based user.
“We Can’t Afford Food—How Do We Afford Data?”
This increase comes at a time when Nigerians are already struggling to afford basic necessities. Food prices are at an all-time high, transportation costs have surged, and power supply remains unreliable.
“We can’t even afford food, and now they’re making data unaffordable too?” asked a student who relies on the internet for learning. “This is pure wickedness.”
For many Nigerians, data is not a luxury—it is essential for business, education, job hunting, and communication. The sudden surge in costs could cut off millions from digital opportunities, forcing small businesses, freelancers, and students to struggle even more.
Telecom Industry’s Silence and Consumer Frustration
Despite the backlash, neither MTN nor the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has provided a clear justification for the increase. Consumers are demanding answers, urging the government to step in and regulate telecom pricing to prevent further exploitation.
“We need accountability. MTN and other networks must explain why they are increasing prices when Nigerians are already suffering,” said a digital marketer who depends on affordable data for work.
A Call for Fairness
As Nigerians battle inflation and economic instability, the burden of high telecom costs adds another layer of hardship. Citizens are calling for fair pricing and transparency, insisting that data should remain affordable and accessible for all.
With mounting pressure, the big question remains: Will MTN reconsider this price hike, or will Nigerians be forced to bear yet another economic blow?
